The mysteries of the lost city of Teotihuacan

When you enter Teotihuacan for the first time, an impression of grandeur strikes you, like the Aztecs who discovered the city in the 14th century. It was they who named the city ‘Teotihuacan’, the city of the gods.

What people could have built these gigantic pyramids, notably the 65-metre high Pyramid of the Sun, the largest in the world after Cheops? What civilisation could have founded one of the world’s first metropolises? No text, no inscription made it possible to identify the builders.

Experts have been asking these questions for centuries. But in March 2019, the archaeologist of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), in charge of the excavations under the pyramid of the feathered serpent, Sergio Gomez, made an unprecedented discovery: the Maya would have been present during the construction of Teotihuacan from the beginning of the 1st century… What role did this ancient civilisation play in the construction of the largest pre-Columbian city?
