In northern Guatemala, the city of Tikal is one of the most important archaeological sites and urban centres of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization. Recent discoveries and new technological tools have brought to light its grandeur and the architectural prowess of its monuments, temples, palaces and tombs of kings. Capital of one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya, Tikal dominated politically, militarily and economically a large part of the region. The site was abandoned at the end of the 10th century.
